The Profile

The Barbados Light & Power Company Limited (BLPC), a member of the Emera Group of Companies, is seeking applications from suitably qualified professionals to fill the position of Vice President (VP) Communications & External Relations. Reporting to the Managing Director, this Executive is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies that enhance corporate reputation, customer engagement, government relations and community outreach.  This position has oversight of the customer experience function, ensuring that the utility delivers a high standard of service to its customers.

The Role of Communications & External Relations

  • To develop and lead the organization's corporate communications strategy to maintain brand consistency and enhance public trust.
  • To oversee internal and external communications, ensuring transparency and alignment with corporate values.
  • To manage media relations, including press releases, public statements, and crisis communication strategies, serving as the company’s primary spokesperson in media engagements and industry events. 
  • To build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, policymakers and regulatory bodies.
  • To develop and implement customer engagement strategies, collaborating with operations teams to ensure communication strategies support customer service excellence.
  • To develop and execute community outreach programs that align with corporate values, support local communities and strengthen relationships with nonprofits, industry associations and advocacy groups.
  • To lead corporate social responsibility initiatives, ensuring the company remains a responsible corporate citizen.
  • To develop and oversee budgets, metrics, and performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of communication and engagement strategies.

The Candidate

  • Qualifications in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Business, or a related field preferably at the Master’s level. 
  • A minimum of ten years’ leadership experience in corporate communications, public relations, government relations, customer experience or stakeholder engagement  with a  track record in managing media relations, crisis communications, and brand reputation.
  • Strong leadership experience in managing diverse teams and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Prior experience in leading customer experience strategies and service improvement programs would be an asset.
